Job Description

Senior UX Researcher

Supporting multiple OptumRx and the IDP initiative. Healthcare experience is preferred. The candidate must be able to present prior work examples as a part of the interview process. Redaction is acceptable if they contain data that cannot be shared.

Top requirements:

  • Familiarity with the research methodologies
  • Ability to set a research roadmap/timeline
  • Ability to evangelize UX research benefits and following best practices to stakeholders

What experience will set candidates apart from one another? The ability to translate complex research findings into a non-academic, business-appropriate tone and language that can be understood by non-research staff while not losing the importance of the research findings or downplaying the importance of conducting research.

Location: Open to remote, but our expectation would be a conversion at the end of the project, and they must be willing to travel (COVID allowing) to run any necessary studies that utilize our research lab in MN. The researcher will determine when in-person research is required and thus will be the owner of how much travel is needed, in collaboration with business partners who fund the research. Cannot provide sponsorship upon conversion.

Team structure: All project teams have a product owner. Most have associated UX designers, which may or may not come from UXDS. The researcher will seldom interact with developers, and will partner with the product owner in setting the research plan path. Additional stakeholders will vary by project, and change frequently.

Interview process:

  • How many rounds? Three rounds, two with team members (individually)
  • Video vs. phone? Video + screen sharing for the former research artifacts.
  • How technical will the interviews be? They will be asked technical questions about standard research processes and research platforms/tools they have used.

Job responsibilities:

  • Design, conduct, analyze, and report data gathered from qualitative and quantitative research techniques including key-stroke level modeling (KLM), usability testing, contextual inquiry / field studies, surveys, interviews, heuristic evaluations, focus groups, card sorts, ethnography and persona development, and rapid iterative testing within an Agile environment.
  • Work with assigned product teams to identify and prioritize user research requirements; create research timelines, scope, and define appropriate methodologies.
  • Assist in developing remediation plans for issues identified from research as appropriate.
  • Advocate that established user-research principles be followed.
  • Collaborate with product teams to develop research goals, identify tasks and scenarios, and establish a test environment.
  • Create and deliver test result reports including statistical analysis.
  • Establish research and usability metrics strategies for project teams.

Job qualifications:

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent commercial experience.
  • 5+ years’ experience as a usability research practitioner (designer roles will not count toward this total).
  • 5+ years’ demonstrated experience delivering user research, including but not limited to developing user personas, conducting field studies / contextual inquiry, and usability testing.
  • Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills; the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences and varying levels of the organization.
  • Proven ability to deliver research on time while working on multiple projects.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent leadership and relationship building skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • High level of energy and customer focus.
  • Experience working on a PC.
  • Experience working in a team environment or with an application team.

Nice to have skills/attributes:

  • Eye-tracking experience preferred.
  • Experience with Cogulator or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience with Nvivo or similar tool preferred.
  • Experience with tools such as UserZoom, UserTesting.
