DESCRIPTION

The Neuropsychiatry Clinical Pharmacist serves as a medication therapy expert specializing in the treatment of patients with neurologic and psychiatric conditions. This pharmacist collaborates with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team to optimize pharmacotherapy, improve patient outcomes, and ensure safe and effective medication use. The role involves both direct patient care and population health initiatives, with a focus on complex psychopharmacology and neurologic disease management, including substance use disorders. Work assignments will be varied and may include acute care patient focused areas, the emergency department, county sites, and emergency response teams, to name a few.

Under general supervision, responsible for provision and documentation of medications and medication-related services to patients, according to standards established by the Department of Pharmacy. Serve as preceptor to pharmacy residents and students as assigned. Participate in Medical Center and Departmental committees and promote institution-wide medication use policy.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide comprehensive pharmacotherapy management for patients with psychiatric and neurologic disorders (e.g., opioid use disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression).
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, clinics, and consult services to recommend evidence-based medication therapy.
  • Conduct medication therapy reviews, reconcile medications, and assess for drug interactions, duplications, and appropriateness.
  • Provide patient and caregiver education on disease states, medications, side effects, and adherence strategies.
  • Monitor for efficacy, safety, and tolerability of psychiatric and neurologic drug therapies; adjust regimens under collaborative practice agreements when appropriate.
  • Serve as a resource for psychotropic and neurologic medication management, including substance use disorders, long-acting injectables, clozapine, and treatment-resistant conditions.
  • Assist with transitions of care to ensure continuity of neuropsychiatric medication management.
  • Develop and implement clinical guidelines, protocols, and order sets for neuropsychiatric pharmacotherapy.
  • Precept pharmacy residents and students; provide education to medical and nursing staff.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, medication use evaluations, and research in neuropsychiatric pharmacotherapy.
  • Stay current with literature and emerging therapies in neuropsychiatry.
Work Environment:
  • Clinical practice settings may include, but not limited to, inpatient psychiatry, emergency department, neurology, outpatient behavioral health clinics, county sites (e.g. Fire Department or homeless shelters), or integrated primary care.
Reports To:
  • Pharmacy Clinical Manager / Director of Pharmacy Services.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Doctorate of Pharmacy degree or equivalent clinical experience.
  • Registered Pharmacist - issued by the state of California (RPH).
  • Incumbents can meet the minimum experience qualifications for this position in 1 of 3 ways: 1) possesses a PGY 2 or 2) possesses a PGY 1 plus 1 year of pharmacist experience, or 3) possesses 4 years of pharmacist experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Completion of a PGY2 Residency in Psychiatry, Neurology, or Pharmacotherapy strongly preferred.
  • Board Certification in Psychiatric Pharmacy (BCPP) or eligibility to obtain within 1-2 years of hire.
  • Current, active pharmacist licensure in good standing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Will require participation in weekend or evening coverage as part of pharmacy clinical services.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Annual Full Pay Range: $190,488 - $225,337 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)


Hourly Equivalent: $91.23 - $107.92

The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
