The Database Administrator VI provides lead-level database administration and technical support for DOI/IA enterprise database, application, and reporting environments. This role serves as a subject matter expert for database platforms and leads database administration activities across production and non-production environments. Responsibilities include database design, backup and recovery, patching, monitoring, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and modernization support. The position also leads project-based work involving upgrades, migrations, implementation, testing, disaster recovery planning, and operational improvement. This role includes support for Oracle database environments in addition to other enterprise database platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Lead administration and support of DOI/IA database environments across production, test, and development systems.
  • Serve as SME for database projects, database platforms, and database-related infrastructure support.
  • Support Oracle and other enterprise database platforms, including configuration, patching, upgrades, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Lead backup, restore, recovery, and disaster recovery planning and readiness activities for database environments.
  • Design and maintain database structures, logical data models, normalized and physical table designs, and database architecture updates.
  • Support coding, testing, and implementation of database objects including procedures, functions, packages, constraints, and triggers.
  • Monitor database performance, availability, latency, and queuing, and recommend improvements for tuning and optimization.
  • Support database jobs, data extraction, ad hoc reporting, and data manipulation requests.
  • Administer database access, account creation, password changes, and role-based access control in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Maintain database documentation, database dictionaries, configuration records, logs, and standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure database changes follow approved configuration management, SDLC, security, and change control requirements.
  • Coordinate with application, reporting, infrastructure, and disaster recovery teams to support integrated enterprise solutions.
  • Lead and support project-based tasks involving modernization, migration, implementation, testing, and operational improvement.
  • Support projects involving any new or existing database implementations that require access to a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) or will exchange data with an RDBMS that have any impact on the existing or planned systems
  • Shall monitor databases for availability, latency, and queuing
  • Support would include (but not limited to): backup and recovery of systems, patching of systems, providing Tier II/III support to lower tiers, performance tuning, hardware upgrades, operational configurations, resource optimization, etc.
  • Open tickets for monitoring and outages.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Associate's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 6+ years of relational database management experience.
  • 6+ years of related technical experience supporting database platforms in a data center or enterprise environment.
  • Ability to obtain Public Trust
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with backup and recovery, patching, Tier II/III support, performance tuning, hardware upgrades, operational configurations, and resource optimization.
  • Experience supporting Oracle database environments, including Oracle database administration and database programming objects.
  • Experience with MS SQL Server, Azure SQL, MySQL, or other enterprise RDBMS platforms.
  • Experience with data modeling, normalization, de-normalization, and database architecture design.
  • Experience supporting database modernization, migration, and enterprise implementation initiatives.
  • Familiarity with SDLC, configuration management, change management, STIGs, A&A, and security documentation requirements.
  • Experience supporting reporting, data extraction, application-integrated databases, or data warehouse environments.
  • Relevant database, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or related technical certifications are preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required government suitability or clearance, if applicable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to design a database to the third normal form.
  • Ability to write disaster recovery plans.
  • Ability to develop project management documentation.
  • Ability to work without guidance.
  • Ability to manage and initiate projects.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as an SME for database projects.
  • Knowledge of enterprise database administration and operational support practices.
  • Knowledge of Oracle and other enterprise database platforms, tools, and support requirements.
  • Knowledge of backup and recovery, patching, performance tuning, monitoring, and database security controls.
  • Knowledge of logical data modeling, normalization, and database design principles.
  • Skill in leading database troubleshooting and resolving complex operational issues.
  • Skill in preparing technical documentation, procedures, and project records.
  • Ability to lead database projects and coordinate across technical teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with users, technical staff, and management.
  • Has the ability to manage and initiate projects.
  • Works on Servers as SME for database projects.
